ARTIST STATEMENT
From the large leafed plants and overhanging trees to the intense tropical colors, the lush nature of New Orleans seeps into my paintings. Hundreds of different shades of greens, bright oranges and passionate reds fill my canvases. I use color to create a sensuous energy whether I am painting a simple bunch of flowers, larger than life fruit, or a solitary figure.

Since Hurricane Katrina, I find myself trying to capture some of the beauty, mysticism, character, and even the some of the destruction of this unique metropolis. Since the storm I have spent a lot of time trying to determine what really symbolizes the city...and I have found a personal symbol in the statue of Joan of Arc, "The Maid of Orleans," that was given to New Orleans by France. I have used the image of the Statue to represent my many conflicting feelings about the city I love as well as the people who have persevered and survived and those who have lost everything, yet hold their heads high.

I have also used the visual thread of the Mississippi River to tie my paintings together as a group in this “Crescent City Series.” These paintings have just a few of the many images that symbolize New Orleans for me.
